How to calculate sludge quantity.

Hello every one,

I am a student of engineering. Currently i am working on a project of calculating the potential of generation of biogas from sewage water of a town. The problem i am facing is that there is no waste water treatment plant. Due to this i cannot analyze sluddge i.e. to calculate TVS in sludge to calculate the potential of generation of waste water. However, i took sample of 1 ltr of sewage water in lmholf cone and observed the amount sludge which settled after 30 min and calculated TVS in the settled sludge. But i do not feel comfortable with this approach.
I would like to request you all to propse me another approach for calculating quantity of sludge produced from waste water and how to get a sample of sludge for analysis.
Average sewage water discharge of the town is 8mgd.

Hi

First for biogas generation from sewage treatment see the UN web through www.unfccc.int and www.ipcc.ch , This two web provide the overal guideline for climate change info including the biogas generation.

2nd Search the sample of PDD for biogas generation from sewage treatment plant. They mention detail calculation of biogas generation as called "biogas baseline project". PDD is project design document which is basic document for UN project climate change.

For general calculation

1. Check the general characteristic wastewater from sewage treatment plant (STP), example TSS 100 - 300 ppm, including COD, BOD and other. Or do the sampling in several location and check the TSS content.

2. Calculate the potential wastewater from domestic. By general knowledge 1 PE will use water 200 - 500 liter/day/PE. PE = population equivalent. Calculate with the population in your town. You will get the quantity of domestic water / day.

3. Biogas conversion is not from TSS convertion, but from COD or BOD load conversion.

As for the second option problem is the same i.e. there is no waste water treatment plant. I have calculated TSS, TDS, TVS, BOD, COD and some other components.
Please tell me method of calculation of biogas from COB and BOD of waste water. I also have to calulate size of anaerobic digester for sludge produced from waste water which is 8mgd.
